Frequently Asked Questions for Volunteers Completing Required Community Service
Who can do community service at the ReStore?
Anyone 16 and over with the following:
• Students performing school requirements
• Court-ordered individuals in Guilford Co. (no violent, shoplifting, larceny, or abuse cases)
• Individuals completing preemptive hours before attending court
When can I do my hours/How do I start?
• Sign up to attend a Mandatory Community Service Orientation on the volunteer calendar (offered every Tuesday morning from 9-10am and the second Saturday of every month from 9-10am).
• Schedule for shifts to work: Monday – Saturday 9:30-5:30 shifts available:
o 9:30am-2pm (no break)
o 1pm-5:30pm (no break)
o All Day (30 min. lunch)
What do I need to bring?
• Your paperwork from the school, court, case worker, or lawyer.
• A photo ID
• A positive attitude
What should I wear?
• Closed-toe and closed heel shoes. No sandals, flip-flops, or slip-ons (if you show up with improper footwear you will be sent home)
• Casual work clothes that can get dirty. Dress for the weather – warehouse is not heated or cooled.
• NO tank tops, short shorts, inappropriate t-shirts, dangling jewelry, and overly baggy clothing.
What will I be doing?
• Assignments vary by day but generally include: sweeping, dusting, cleaning donations, stocking shelves, vacuuming, loading items in cars/trucks, unloading trucks, assisting customers, putting items on display, tearing down or creating new displays.
What should I do when I arrive?
• Check in at the office when you arrive to sign in. Make sure to sign out at the end of your shift and for your lunch break. If you do not sign in or out you will not receive credit for hours worked that day.
• Check in with the Project Coordinator or the Dock Receiving Coordinator to be assigned a task. Inform staff of any physical limitations on your first day of work.
• If you arrive before 10am enter through the green door to the warehouse.
• Complete all assigned tasks and continue to check in with staff for new assignments.
What is considered inappropriate behavior?
• Excessive cell phone use.
• Inappropriate language or conversational topics.
• Refusing to perform assigned duties.
• Hiding out to get out of work.
• Falsifying hours on the log sheet.
