Habitat Mission Trips

HABITAT GREENSBORO MISSION TRIPS

A JOURNEY TO JORDAN

Habitat Greensboro has been sending mission groups to Habitat Jordan in Amman since 2005. Participants on this trip work and travel in a Muslim country, thus giving witness to Habitat Greensboro's commitment "to provide educational and spiritual opportunities for our volunteers within the cross-cultural environment" and "to promote a wider vision of service to others in other places and other lands."

In January 2008, the team from Greensboro came home with a common response: their lives and perceptions are forever changed. They worked hard mixing concrete by hand, bending rebar, making cement block and pouring the roof. The process of passing the numerous buckets of cement mix down the chain of volunteers to the last person who was ready to pour the roof was a task which required each person to summon up a physical and mental strength which many had not experienced in quite a while. As the team worked together to build this home for a family in Jordan, they felt exhilarated and blessed to have the opportunity to be in this place at this time with these friends from Jordan and Greensboro. A bond has been forged that will remain in their hearts and souls forever.

In 2010, a mission trip was taken to Jordan in partnership with First Baptist Church of Greensboro and under the leadership of Dr. Steve Pressley. The group traveled during March 12-24, 2010 and reports are that this was a truly meaningful experience for everyone who participated.

HONDURAS MISSION TRIPS

Habitat Greensboro has been supporting our friends in Honduras with tithes and service since 1991. Teams of Habitat volunteers have eagerly made their way to Honduras to work side-by-side with the families to dig foundations, make adobe bricks and build homes that average approximately 360 - 450 square feet - two small bedrooms, a living/kitchen area and a bathroom. The housing needs are immense as 53% of the 7 million residents of Honduras live below the poverty line.

In April 2010, a team of volunteers traveled to La Cieba, Honduras. They worked hard making adobe bricks, digging foundations, breaking up rock and building homes for families in La Cieba. Strong bonds were made with the people on the worksite and in the community. The memories of building and fellowship with the Habitat families in Honduras will forever remain with each of the participants. We hope you will think about joining us in 2011!

KATRINA RELIEF

The Gulf areas impacted by Hurricane Katrina are still in dire need of assistance as they continue to try and put their lives back together. The scale is indescribable…

Along the Gulf Coast, local Habitat affiliates (along with generous volunteer efforts) are currently starting construction on more than 57 homes per month in a region where, prior to Katrina, Habitat affiliates as a group had built on average only 57 homes per year. In May, 2007, the walls were raised on the 1000th and 1001st homes, marking both a milestone and a commitment to the ongoing effort to help rebuild the area.

Teams from Habitat have traveled to the Gulf Coast for the past 4 years. During February 2010, one of the Habitat Greensboro teams spent a week working with the East St. Tammany Habitat affiliate sharing their gifts of time and talent with families who yearn to recover that sense of "home" that they lost during Hurricane Katrina. There is still much work to be done to help these families restore their homes and lives.
