Building
You may know about our mission of building new homes for deserving families. To serve even more families and make the most of our resources, we also renovate previously-owned homes, upcycle Habitat homes that have been returned, and repair homes of current Habitat homeowners.
We partner with corporations, faith organizations, foundations, individuals and volunteers to build affordable, energy-efficient houses for and with working families who meet ownership requirements. Since families pay the full cost for Habitat houses and all future maintenance, we’re committed to building high-quality, energy-efficient and sustainable houses that families are proud to call home.
In 2009, we were awarded a Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) grant to rehabilitate homes that have been abandoned or foreclosed upon or to develop vacant properties to sell to new Habitat homeowners. With those funds, Habitat Greensboro purchased 17 houses and a vacant lot – and we rolled up our sleeves and got to work!
We set high standards for the houses we renovate to make sure they’re as energy-efficient and sustainable as our new construction. Under the NSP grant, we’ve rehabilitated and sold nine homes to Habitat homeowners, and construction on the other eight will be completed by August 2012.
Occasionally, a homeowner chooses to forego homeownership and return his/her house to Habitat Greensboro. When this occurs, we renovate the house, making all necessary repairs and improvements before another Habitat family purchases the home. The result is another high-quality home for a working family.
Some Habitat homeowners have been in their homes for decades. To preserve their investment, we offer critical repair services at a reasonable cost.
Experienced volunteers and subcontractors provide services that range from installing a new furnace to repairing weather-related damage. Homeowners pay for these repairs through money they’ve set aside in an escrow account when they pay their monthly mortgage. Homeowners can also apply for an interest-free loan to cover these costs.
We’re always looking for experienced handymen and handywomen for our work to repair and renovate homes. Learn more.
